Operations

A good backup strategy is part of the system, not an afterthought.

If you run self-hosted services, backups are the difference between a minor outage and a frustrating rebuild.

Rule:Backups matter more than fancy dashboards when the system fails.

Core principles

  • Back up the services that matter most first
  • Keep at least one off-site or external backup copy
  • Test restore processes regularly
  • Document the recovery order for each service

What a useful restore plan looks like

A simple restore plan should answer three questions: what needs to be backed up, where it lives, and how fast it can be recovered. The better your documentation, the faster recovery becomes.

Do not rely on one backup location. A mix of local copies and external copies is often the safest approach, especially for media, config, and database-heavy workloads.
