What to compare before buying
Capacity and redundancy
Count usable bays and choose a drive layout for your capacity and drive-failure tolerance. Redundancy is not a backup, so keep another copy of important data separately.
Network fit
A faster NAS port only helps when your switch, client, and cabling can support it. A standard gigabit network can still be perfectly adequate for many homes.
Appliance or server
Check whether you need shared storage only or also want to run apps and virtual machines. A storage appliance may work best alongside a separate compute server.
