Architecture

Good homelab structure is boring, and that is a good thing.

A stable home lab is usually made of a small set of intentionally layered systems: network, compute, storage, and applications. The easiest labs to maintain are the ones with clear boundaries.

Rule of thumb:Separate critical systems from experimental ones so one failed project does not take the whole lab down.

Layering the lab

  • Core network and switching
  • Virtualization or server operating system
  • Storage and backups
  • Application services and private access

Design rules

Keep services on a predictable naming scheme, define clear roles for each host or VM, and make sure backups are not stored on the same primary storage layer as the services themselves. Documented boundaries are what keep a lab scaleable.
