Application patterns

Build a stack that is useful before it becomes impressive.

A beginner self-hosting stack should solve real problems: files, media, backups, and access to services without constant manual maintenance.

Start here:Pick a few services you use often, then make them reliable and well-documented.

Starter stack

  • A reverse proxy for routing and HTTPS
  • A DNS solution for clean internal service names
  • A backup or sync tool for important data
  • A monitoring layer so you know when something breaks

What to prioritize

Keep the first stack small. A reverse proxy, a file storage service, a backup system, and a way to monitor health are enough to give you a very useful home lab without turning the setup into a management burden.
